About proxy detection
This tool checks if an IP address belongs to a known proxy, VPN, Tor network, or other anonymising service.
What is proxy detection?
Proxy detection identifies whether an IP address belongs to an anonymising service rather than a regular residential or business internet connection. This includes VPNs, proxy servers, Tor exit nodes, and data centre IPs commonly used to mask a user’s true location.
Types of proxies detected
VPN services - Commercial VPN providers that route traffic through their servers, masking the user’s real IP address. Popular for privacy but also used to bypass geographic restrictions.
Public proxies - Open proxy servers that anyone can use to relay their traffic. Often unreliable and potentially insecure.
Tor exit nodes - The final relay in the Tor network where traffic exits to the regular internet. Strongly associated with anonymity-seeking users.
Data centre IPs - IP addresses belonging to hosting providers and cloud services rather than ISPs. Often used for automated traffic, bots, or proxy services.
Residential proxies - Harder to detect as they route traffic through real residential IP addresses, but can still be identified through behavioural patterns and known proxy networks.
Why detect proxies?
Fraud prevention - Fraudsters often use proxies to hide their location when making purchases with stolen credentials or creating fake accounts.
Account security - Unusual proxy usage on an account that normally connects directly may indicate compromise.
Content licensing - Enforce geographic restrictions for streaming content or region-locked services.
Bot detection - Many automated attacks and scraping operations route through proxies and data centres.
Regulatory compliance - Some industries require knowing the true location of users for legal or compliance reasons.
Detection accuracy
No proxy detection is 100% accurate. Detection rates vary by proxy type:
- Data centre IPs - Very high detection rate (90%+)
- Known VPN providers - High detection rate (80-90%)
- Tor exit nodes - Very high detection rate (95%+)
- Residential proxies - Lower detection rate (varies widely)
False positives can occur with corporate networks, mobile carriers, and satellite internet providers that may share characteristics with proxy services.
How this tool works
Enter any IP address to check whether it appears in proxy, VPN, and Tor databases. This tool is powered by a QuantCDN Edge Function that queries multiple threat intelligence sources at the edge.
